WSP invites you to their annual Winter Exhibition taking place on 14th - 15th November. They will be showcasing a collection of hand thrown, hand built and sculptural ceramics, available to purchase. There will also be an opportunity to win some beautiful pieces of work, learn about their history and clay practices.
They are a friendly and committed group, running day and evening pottery and sculpture classes, welcoming all abilities, with an aim to develop students’ creative abilities through the acquisition of practical skills and an appreciation of the broader aspects of ceramics whilst nurturing a creative environment. Over the years, they have worked closely with the community, offering workshops to local schools and young people’s charities, supporting Farnham Craft Town events and galleries as well as mentoring university and work experience students. West Street Potters has a long and interesting history. In 1946, Paul Barron and Henry Hammond, internationally recognised Ceramicists were appointed lecturers at the Farnham School of Art, initiating pottery courses that drew in students from across the world. With a strong reputation for the quality of teaching, the Art School attracted students who enjoyed working to achieve their own goals, some becoming professional makers, Mary Wondrausch OBE and some tutors – Duncan Ross, Rupert Spira and later Julia Quigley, who still teaches at WSP today.
Later, in 1999, West Street Potters was formed as a non-profit company and named after the street on which they originally resided. With several talented new tutors appointed over the years to enhance and refresh teaching skills, they have continued to teach hundreds of students their craft at the Farnham Pottery in Wrecclesham, a listed building of great character dating back to 1872 and one of the finest examples of its type left in England.
